My choice of online shopping platform when teaching Textiles and Clothing topics

URL: http://www.princess-collections.com/

On top of the online shopping platforms introduced by Esther and Jeline, I feel that this online shopping platform is also useful for teaching topics related to Textiles and Clothing.

Princess-collections is a rather popular local blogshop which imports and sells clothes suitable for teenage girls. It also has a shop in Far East Plaza, a popular shopping centre for teenage girls.

This website is suitable for teaching lower secondary students topics such as advertising, consumer rights and responsibilities, budgeting, clothing care and clothing care, for the following reasons:

1) Prices on this online shopping platform are in Singapore Dollars, thus students will not need to convert them from a foreign currency to SG dollars, making calculations easier for them when introducing them the topic on Budgeting.

2) The prices that are shown on this website is the usual spending budget for an average Singaporean teenage girl, thus using this website as an example will be relevant and authentic to them.

3) Instructions on payment mode and postage charges are clearly stated on this website, thus I can easily refer this website to students when teaching consumer rights and responsibilities, as well as budgeting.

4) The use of pretty and fair-skinned girls as models for their clothes/bags/accessories will be useful for me when teaching the topic of Advertising to students.

5) This website does not give a comprehensive list of dimensions of the clothes they sell (the usual dimensions are the length and width), thus, when teaching them consumer rights and responsibilities, I can highlight to them their rights as a consumer, and they can ask the seller for more information about the clothing (eg. sleeve length, armhole length when clothing is placed on a flat surface, etc.) before deciding whether to purchase it.

6) I can teach students on Clothing Care since for most clothing the material of the clothes is provided by the seller.

7) Common transaction methods (such as IBanking, Paypal and the usual fund-transfer) are used for this website, thus I can teach students on the usefulness and flipsides of these transactions.

8) I can also teach students the usefulness of online shopping (eg. convenience right at the comfort of their own home), as well as the problems (eg. dimensions of the clothes may not fit them nicely, colour of clothing may not appear the same as what is shown on the computer screen) associated with online shopping.

A flipside of choosing this website will be the limit variety of clothing I can show as examples for male students. Other than t-shirts for couples, almost 95% of clothes sold on this shopping platform is targetted for teenage girls.

On a personal note, I wouldn't recommend introducing online shopping websites which have pictures of zoomed-in body parts of voluptuous models (especially if I were to teach in a co-ed school. I don't think it is a good idea to introduce them to my male adolescent students, then facing the likehood of receiving complaints from parents on cyberwellness issues later.

But then again, what are the chances you can find platforms with models not revealing too much? (It's precisely because of her beauty that the model is a model for the shopping platform, isn't it? Hmm.) =s
