Knitting VS Crochet?

Knitting Versus Crochet

This post is a sequel of a random question brought up by the three of us.

Question post - -> What is the difference between knitting and crochet?

One most distinct difference between the two is the tools used.

Knitting requires two needles (top) but Crochet only need a single hook (right).
Another difference is although both can be used to make articles of clothing but crochet work is generally lighter but knitting tends to produce heavier articles like knitted sweaters for winter.

Hope to learn more on crocheting?

Zipia.net Fashion Network & Wholesale Mall

http://www.zipia.net/

This Website features Korean Fashion for both Man & Woman.

It has a lot of items on sale, ranging from Hair accessories to Jackets and Shoes - From Top to toe.
The items are categorised into tabs for easy browsing.
Accompanying each picture is a short description on the item, followed by the product code.
E.g. feather motive stylish pin-05-V27905

Images are also animated to show the different colours of the same product if there are more than one design so that all colours can be observed.

The date of the last up-date is also available under the product description.

Listed are also the most popular products and products that are ready to be shipped.

Overall, the scope of the clothing and accessories are very wide and varied. The simple and large icon display for the products allow us to browse through the mall conveniently.

The pros of this website is that it also has customer service and a Q&A section for you to inquire on delivery, payment, cancellation/refund/change products.
The cons of this website is its pricey products and minimum sum of USD 300.00 required. Also the company has no branches in Singapore yet, so there will not be any opportunity for you to go down to the shop. This increases the risk factor of online shopping.

It is basically a physical shop in the virtual network with all the customer services available.

However, registration is required before you can select any of the items for further viewing/ information. So privacy may be an issue if you decide not to buy but still have to become a registered member.

Did I mention that they also give monthly discounts? Discounts are issued as e-cash into the members' account for redemption in the next purchase. Which is a great incentive to shop.

This website can be used in the teaching of Consumer & Textile lessons by showing and reviewing the current fashion and trends. Teachers can direct students to look at the products and determine if these are good buys. Teachers can also direct students to look at the FAQs and customer service platforms of the site, as well as the online mode of payment and to consider follow-up service as part of their decision making process.

My choice of online shopping platform when teaching Textiles and Clothing topics

URL: http://www.princess-collections.com/

On top of the online shopping platforms introduced by Esther and Jeline, I feel that this online shopping platform is also useful for teaching topics related to Textiles and Clothing.

Princess-collections is a rather popular local blogshop which imports and sells clothes suitable for teenage girls. It also has a shop in Far East Plaza, a popular shopping centre for teenage girls.

This website is suitable for teaching lower secondary students topics such as advertising, consumer rights and responsibilities, budgeting, clothing care and clothing care, for the following reasons:

1) Prices on this online shopping platform are in Singapore Dollars, thus students will not need to convert them from a foreign currency to SG dollars, making calculations easier for them when introducing them the topic on Budgeting.

2) The prices that are shown on this website is the usual spending budget for an average Singaporean teenage girl, thus using this website as an example will be relevant and authentic to them.

3) Instructions on payment mode and postage charges are clearly stated on this website, thus I can easily refer this website to students when teaching consumer rights and responsibilities, as well as budgeting.

4) The use of pretty and fair-skinned girls as models for their clothes/bags/accessories will be useful for me when teaching the topic of Advertising to students.

5) This website does not give a comprehensive list of dimensions of the clothes they sell (the usual dimensions are the length and width), thus, when teaching them consumer rights and responsibilities, I can highlight to them their rights as a consumer, and they can ask the seller for more information about the clothing (eg. sleeve length, armhole length when clothing is placed on a flat surface, etc.) before deciding whether to purchase it.

6) I can teach students on Clothing Care since for most clothing the material of the clothes is provided by the seller.

7) Common transaction methods (such as IBanking, Paypal and the usual fund-transfer) are used for this website, thus I can teach students on the usefulness and flipsides of these transactions.

8) I can also teach students the usefulness of online shopping (eg. convenience right at the comfort of their own home), as well as the problems (eg. dimensions of the clothes may not fit them nicely, colour of clothing may not appear the same as what is shown on the computer screen) associated with online shopping.

A flipside of choosing this website will be the limit variety of clothing I can show as examples for male students. Other than t-shirts for couples, almost 95% of clothes sold on this shopping platform is targetted for teenage girls.

On a personal note, I wouldn't recommend introducing online shopping websites which have pictures of zoomed-in body parts of voluptuous models (especially if I were to teach in a co-ed school. I don't think it is a good idea to introduce them to my male adolescent students, then facing the likehood of receiving complaints from parents on cyberwellness issues later.

But then again, what are the chances you can find platforms with models not revealing too much? (It's precisely because of her beauty that the model is a model for the shopping platform, isn't it? Hmm.) =s

Online Shopping Platform (Forever 21)

Forever 21 is a familiar name to all Singaporeans. Having setup a number of boutiques island-wide, Forever 21 influence in the Fashion and Beauty industry is unquestionable. Through the years, it has gain trust and support from many regular customers of a wide age range.

Therefore, using Forever 21 online shopping is likely to connect fairly well with the student. With their prior knowledge on this brand, illustrations of ideas relating to C&T is facilitated.

Moreover, the interface of the entire website is simple, clear and concise. Users can navigate with not much of a problem. On the home page, it is regularly updated with their latest release and to navigate around one simply have to click on the tabs (at the header). As simple as that! :)

The web designer has also meticulously added a number of features to satisfy the demands of consumers. Buy clothes, shoes or even jeans online can be risk-taking. It involves much risk including varied in quality, colour and size of your desired product. So to minimize the risk for consumers, this website has a short description (including material) of the clothing, zoom in features, 360 degrees rotations of the clothing, measurements, sizes, colour and availability. These are additional bonuses provided by the shop.

In the teaching of C&T, this website can facilitate in the teaching of differentiating different materials and how their properties affect the the making of various types of clothing by showing examples on the web. (e.g wool for making of sweater). Having a large database of clothing, students can be taught of the ways of maintaining their clothes (refer to short description beside the product) and how to match and mix clothing and accessories for different occasions (refer to picture below). Topic on colour combination, budgeting, customer rights and responsibility can also be incorporated.
Another advantage of this platform is the fact that it is catered to both women as well as males. Hence, male students will not be left out for these sessions whereby disscussion is carried out in class.
